Apollo 1 Fire - 50 Years Later

On this day, January 27, 1967, a fire aboard the Apollo 1 spacecraft claimed the lives of astronauts Gus Grissom, Edward White and Roger B. Chaffee.
A horrible tragedy that set back the space program, but it did not stop it.
About two and a half years later, man first set foot on the moon.
Lessons were learned from the fire and future missions were made safer.
Apollo 1 became a sealed tomb as the escape hatch would take too long to open and the astronauts were overcome by smoke and fire.
The spaceship was not set to go up that day, as this was a test in order to get ready for the actual day of liftoff which was to be on February 21st, 1967.
Gus Grissom would have been the first man to walk on the moon and not Neil Armstrong.
Edward White was the first man to exit a ship while in space and float around.
All three men are remembered this day, but they are heroes forever.
